Casement Windows are one of the most popular types of replacement windows for Canadian homes. When installed correctly, these windows that are hinged on the side crank open effortlessly to allow fresh air in. The suppliers that we use all equip their casement windows with a multipoint lock for added security. They also use three layers of weather stripping for optimal efficiency and air tightness.

FIXED

Fixed Windows or Fixed Sash Windows do not open and are designed to pair with casement or awning windows for even sight lines with adjacent casements or awnings as they share the same frame profile. Fixed windows are also commonly recommended when using grille patterns in the glass, as grilles can often embellish the small difference in the frame profile of a picture window that is next to a casement or awning.

PICTURE OR DIRECT SET

Picture Windows or Direct Set Windows, similar to Fixed Windows, do not open and can be paired with casements and awnings as well as with sliders. They can also be used on their own to maximize the view and minimize the size of the frame. Picture windows are usually more budget friendly than their Fixed Window counterparts but are not quite as aesthetically pleasing as Fixed Windows when configured next to a casement or awning because of the small difference in the profile of the frame.

TILT & TURN

Tilt & Turn Windows, also sometimes referred to as European Windows, tilt inward at the top to allow a small amount of airflow, or open wide and swing, or turn, into the room like a door for maximum airflow. This style of window originates overseas and many of the manufacturers available in Canada also reside overseas. Due to the additional functionality of the hardware and the multi-directional operation of these windows, our suppliers use superior quality parts that will withstand the test of time. Higher quality parts allow for more possibilities of window configurations.

AWNING

Awning Windows are similar to casement windows in that they share the same attributes and benefits but they hinge from the top and crank out from the bottom. Most commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms, they allow the room to be vented while keeping the elements out if it is raining or snowing. Due to their limited range of movement there are some building code restrictions on where they can be used in your home.

SINGLE HUNG

Single Hung Windows glide vertically to open and share many of the same attributes as sliding windows. Most commonly used in much older homes, or some newer homes with more traditional designs, single hung windows use what is called a window balance to stay open. Original older versions used a counterweight for the same reason. The most common problem that arises with single hung windows is the eventual wear and tear applied to these balances or counterweights caused by gravity.

DOUBLE HUNG

Double Hung Windows operate the same as single hung windows except that the top sash can glide downward in addition to the bottom sash gliding up. With similar concerns to single hung windows, the potential drawbacks are doubled as gravity will eventually take its toll on the top sash as well as the bottom. Because of this many manufacturers no longer make this style of window as they can be problematic, in addition to not meeting efficiency requirements in many parts of the Country.

SLIDING

Sliding Windows glides horizontally to the left or right to open and allow fresh air in. With fewer moving parts sliding windows are the simplest to operate and are usually more budget friendly. As well, sliders have more practical uses in areas where you might not want a window to open outward where it might become a hazard next to an exterior walkway, stairwell or deck, for example.
